Working in Harness and Rally Results
As well as coming from a great show kennel Kayla also comes from great working lines on her sire's side, he has lots of Anadyr in his pedigree and from a very early age we knew that with Kayla being a high energy dog we would need to try her in harness. We had never tried Skye as she is quite a lazy dog and due to her previous injuries we were not sure if it would hurt her anyway.
In November 2008 when Kayla was 9 months old we bought a scooter. Kayla took to it instantly and loved it. We had been teaching her basic commands gee, haw, hike, whoa etc for months before hand. For a small dog she is very powerful and never seems to tire of running. As Skye has a weight problem (since being spayed she just thinks about food and puts on a kilogram) we thought we would give her a try too. She flatly refuses to pull but if we put her on it behind Kayla she will run along with a big grin on her face as if to say look at me mum and dad I am a husky after all! She can't keep up with Kayla but then she does have short stubby legs bless her but she enjoys a short run with Kayla and is then content to walk along behind with mum.
We had hoped to give Kayla her first race at Quithel in March 2009 - the last Scottish Husky Club race of the season, sadly madam decided to come into season so we had to give it a miss. We had hoped it would be a good opportunity to see how much work we still had to do in order for her to be ready for the 2009/2010 season.
